In case you missed it last week, research is starting to show that the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) is already producing positive results in children’s health. The BBC reports:
“Researchers found that children in London whose lung growth had been stunted by pollution showed impressive improvements after the introduction of an Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) in 2019 reduced emissions.” Read the full article on the BBC.
This article follows on from a study published by Imperial College in June, which states that:
“…since their introduction, the London schemes were linked to 8.1 % reductions in yearly trends for cardiovascular disease, 6.2% for respiratory disease and 3.1% for all cause related hospital admissions in the intervention area.”
While independent researchers have cautioned that other factors must also be considered, the initial results are still looking positive.
Health improvements aren’t political
The idea of low emissions zones has been discussed and implemented by both Conservative and Labour London mayors. What matters more than politics is results.
