You may have noticed there are lots of public consultations at the moment. The latest is about renewing existing legislation for dog controls in support of responsible dog ownership.
The current dog control order has been running for 3 years and is due to expire later in 2026. The plan is to renew it for another 3 years, as required by law, but first the council is checking in with dog owners, dog walkers and residents to see what they think.
Most of the existing rules would stay the same: no dog fouling, no dogs in play parks, and dogs must be kept on leads. The limit of four dogs per walker would also continue. One new proposal is to stop dogs from being allowed in cemeteries. Currently they’re allowed on a lead, but this would change under the new rules if approved.
