Watering street and park trees

As it looks like warmer weather is returning, and people have contacted the councillors – and the council – about caring for the recently planted trees in Coney Hall, we’re sharing their response for a wider audience.

“The trees recently planted in Coney Hall recreational ground were planted in season 2024/25 (November 2024 – March 2025) on a regime of one year’s young tree maintenance in the form of; watering for one season, adjusting planting gear and the topping up of mulch.

Unfortunately, the drought conditions of this year so far have contributed to several of them being stressed, seen by the wilting of the Horse chestnuts leaves, the decline of the Indian bean tree and the leaf curl of Lobel Elms and Oaks.

All the recent rain will help with their recovery.

Trees do not automatically perk up after watering and it can often take weeks for a tree to recover, as such a further site visit is organised for the end of the month and if deemed that further waterings would be beneficial, given that we have financial constraints, we will make a business case for additional funding for this to happen.

In times of drought, we are more than grateful for any help from the public with the watering of trees – please see our watering poster.

If you are able to, feel free to print and share a copy of the poster – and do water the trees, of course!
