Event at St John’s Church

Tomorrow night, 29 May, St John’s, the church on Layhams Road, is hosting a talk by Dick Griffin, former Royal Protection Officer to HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Phillip.

The talk starts at 7:30pm and you can pay by cash donation on the door (minimum donation £5). There’s Pimms and soft drinks available – and all donations go towards Christian Aid.

There are plenty of tales to tell

Born in Newport, Wales, Dick started work as a Police Cadet not long after his 16th birthday. He moved to London and joined the MET in 1970, where he was a constable and sergeant, before working for New Scotland Yard. When Michael Fagan broke into the Queen’s bedroom in Buckingham Palace, Dick was part of a team of six police officers sent in to sort out the reorganisation of security procedures.

Dick’s career took him to the Household of The Duke of Edinburgh, Price Phillip in the 1980s. In 1999, he became a Personal Protection Officer to HM Queen Elizabeth II, a role he held for 14 years until his retirement. He was fortunate to travel to over 160 countries, meeting dignitaries including Nelson Mandela, The Pope and President Bush.

Dick is known as an entertaining speaker – and as you can imagine, has plenty of tales to tell! It should be an interesting night.
