RSPB Bromley talk: Dungeness

RSPB Bromley are a friendly membership group bringing people together to enjoy and learn about wildlife. They have monthly programmes which include entertaining talks, free local walks and day trips to the best nature reserves. All their events are open to everyone, of all ages – members and non-members, wildlife experts and absolute beginners.

On Wednesday evening, 11 February, the Community Talks Volunteer for the RSPB at Dungeness will be holding a talk at the United Reformed Church in Bromley, all about the unique environment at Dungeness.

Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Dungeness has the largest expanse of shingle in Europe. Known for its remarkable variety of wildlife with over 600 different types of plants; stunning wildflower meadows which attract nectar-loving pollinators like bees and butterflies as well as two uncommon bumblebee species – the Brown-banded Carder Bee and Red-shanked Carder Bee; one of the best places for various invertebrates; important place for migratory birds and coastal species.

Dwellings are mainly weatherboard beach houses owned and occupied by the fishermen. “Prospect Cottage” once owned by the late artist and film director Derek Jarman is worth visiting to view the garden.

The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway ends its journey at Dungeness Station. A climb up 169 steps from the Old Dungeness Lighthouse gives a panoramic view of the splendid landscape. There’s nowhere else like it!
