The Big Butterfly Count begins on Friday 18 July and will run until Sunday 10 August. Butterfly Conservation have declared a butterfly emergency, and need your help more than ever before. By taking part in this UK wide survey, you can help assess the health of our environment simply by counting butterflies.
Take part on paper, or with the app
Whether you count the butterflies in your garden, or in Coney Hall’s own butterfly bank in the rec, taking part is easy. Between Friday 18 July and Sunday 10 August choose a place to spot butterflies and moths. Watch for 15 minutes. Then record which species you see.
If you have a smartphone, you can count butterflies with the free app, available for iOS and Android. Alternatively, visit the Big Butterfly Count website to download your free chart which will help identify butterflies so you can tick them off when you see them. When the 15 minutes is up, add your counts to the Big Butterfly Count website. Simple!
Take inspiration from your neighbours
Environmental Action Coney Hall (EACH) are a group of local residents helping to make Coney Hall a pollinator village. In June they held an Open Gardens event, showing how they’re making their own gardens safe havens for wildlife – including butterflies and moths. They also work with Friends of Coney Hall Park to take care of the orchard, butterfly bank and nature reserve. If you’re in the park, look out for their information boards, and take a little nature trail of your own.
