Local events and dates for your diaries

There are lots of things happening locally over the next month, so here’s a little list to make a note of. We’ll try and remind you about them nearer the time too.

Are you planning a local event or organising a local group? Let us know. We’d love to support schools, charities, faiths of every kind, and local hobby and interest groups.

First Friday: Get together for Year 7 and up

Friday 6 June, 7pm to 9pm
SJ’s, 56 Croydon Road
First Fridays is a get together for year 7 and up with pizza, mocktails, games and music. It’s held at SJ’s, a community venue which is part of Saint John the Baptist Church. Adults will be in attendance on the night, just to help make sure things run smoothly, but this is a child-led group, aimed at meeting new friends, hanging out and having fun.

Hayes Fair

Sunday 8 June, 12 noon to 4:30pm
The Warren, Croydon Road, BR2 7AL
Family fun, a wide selection of stalls, live entertainment plus food and drink. Admission is just £1 – and under 5s and dogs get free entry. It’s all in a good cause too. Sponsored by Mary Jones Dental Practice and Neo’s Estate Agents, it’s raising funds for The Chartwell Cancer Trust, Demelza and the Hayes Christmas lights. Coney Hall’s resident chess expert will be there too, so if you have children who are interested in learning (or have ambitions to become a grand master), they’ll be able to learn and play chess for free – find out more.

Gardens for Wildlife Open Day + Plant & Cake sale

14 June, 2pm to 5.30pm
Neighbourhood gardens in Coney Hall
Take a tour around participating gardens in Coney Hall, and find out how people are turning them into welcoming places for wildlife. Tickets are just £5 each for 10 garden visits which includes a cup of tea, coffee or juice at Rouse Farm, a tour of the farm and an opportunity to meet a hedgehog or two! Under 16s go free with an adult. There’ll also be a plant and cake sale, and all proceeds from the day go to our local hedgehog rescue and rehabilitation charity. For advance tickets and further information (including how to open your own garden, if you’d like to join in), contact: Pauline, pssmith223@btinternet.com or Sarah, sarahlouisechant@icloud.com

Amber CPC Cream Teas

14 & 15 June, 2pm to 5pm
Overlooking Coney Hall Valleyentrance from western footpath on the Common at the Hartfield Crescent / Croydon Road junction
Situated on Three Commons Circular Walk, the London Loop and near the Nash Circular Walk, this could be the perfect combination of exercise and reward. Enjoy a traditional cream tea (with free refills) in aid of Amber Crisis and Pregnancy Care. If it’s easier to drive, no one will mind: there’s a public car park (enter from Croydon Road next to Hartfield Crescent) or park in Hartfield Crescent.

Messy Church & Open Church

26 June, 11am
St John’s, Layhams Road.

Messy Church is fun for all the family, with activities for parents and children to do together. You’re welcome whether you’re messy or tidy, whether your child is one of 30 in their age group, or the only one. Pop along to meet other people in your community and find out more.

Every Thursday St John’s also holds an ‘Open Church’. It’s a time when people can explore the church and graveyard, usually with either a written guide or someone who can take you round. Tea and coffee are available too.
