Saint John’s Church (off Layhams Road) has a history dating back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. On Sunday 11th May, from 2pm to 5pm, they’re inviting you to delve into the past and find out more about the present. You can:
- View the registers for baptisms, marriages and burials
- Meet and hear the bell ringers
- Follow a guide to the building and churchyard
- Watch a flower arranging demonstration (3pm to 4pm)
- Have fun with a children’s quiz
- Enjoy cream teas and cakes
- … and more!
It’s all in support of raising funds for Christian Aid. Why not pop along? You’ll find the church off Layhams Road, BR4 9HJ
The oldest part of the current building dates from the 15th century. There’s a 15th century rood screen and some notable painted windows in the chapel, the work of Anglo-Flemish artists. Elsewhere in the church you’ll find windows by Charles Kempe, Herbert Bryans and Powell of Whitefriars.
The exterior of the church is built of stone and flint and the churchyard is also of interest, containing several war graves. If you’ve never been along to explore, now is the perfect time.
