If you got our last newsletter, you’ll know that Sheila, who was our postie for so long, was nominated for a British Empire Medal. We’re pleased so say that’s she’s now received it – and we have a photo to prove it!
In the months since we wrote our article, Sheila has switched to a new route, but we were thrilled to be able to recognise her hard work and the kindness with which she served our community for so long.
Sheila took it upon herself to learn her customers’ names and habits, and at busier times such as Christmas, and throughout the pandemic, she went the extra mile to support the elderly and vulnerable in the community.
She told us she was shocked to discover she was being awarded the medal – the nomination was put in by local residents without her knowledge.
“I was absolutely amazed and thrilled – I couldn’t believe it and still cannot believe it. I started in 1992 working for ParcelForce in Charlton, I then moved to the Royal Mail delivery office in Orpington in 1995 and I now work at West Wickham delivery office, where I’ve been on duty for 10 years.
In that time I have got to know my customers – I see them more as friends. I have been there supporting them with their highs and lows in life. I may be the only person some people talk to that day. I’ve seen children and grandchildren grow up. If I haven’t seen a customer or something doesn’t seem right, I knock to see if they’re okay or need anything. Especially in COVID a lot of people struggled, and customers are saying I made it that bit easier for them when they saw me – I lifted their mood.
If I can just lift one person’s spirits, it makes a big difference. I hope it makes people think, how you can make a difference to someone’s days, by just being nice or helping someone out. You never know what people are going through.”
Congratulations Sheila! (Also, come back, we miss you!)
