Open afternoons at St John’s on Thursdays

Saint John the Baptist Church (off Layhams Road, BR4 9HJ) is a lovely local church building which has a history dating back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The oldest part of the current building dates from the 15th century with various more recent additions. There is a 15th century rood screen and some notable painted windows in the chapel, the work of Anglo-Flemish artists. Elsewhere in the church there are windows by Charles Kempe, his pupil, Herbert Bryans and Powell of Whitefriars.

The exterior of the church is built of stone and flint and the churchyard is also of interest containing several war graves. The churchyard is particularly lovely in the springtime with primroses and other wildflowers and blossoms in abundance.

The church Is open for visiting on Thursdays 2pm to 4pm and free tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. It is on the London Loop footpath so if you are passing by at that time why not drop by or just visit anyway – we’d love to see you.
