The spring/summer work has mainly been the seasonal task of cutting back the paths. The rather gloomy spring held back the usually enthusiastic, ‘Triffid-like’ growth of the brambles – at least for a while.
The Glade and the path leading up to it (past the conifer area) had in the past been a hotspot for bats. But the last check, by a licensed checker, of the bat boxes in the Glade and other areas of the wood found there were no bats in residence. In a bid to reverse this trend and make the path more bat-friendly again, the low overhanging branches were removed and scrub cut back to give a much clearer flight path.
The end result has a much more open and inviting look. Happily there are still bats flying in the woods, including the Glade, which was created in 1999 by the previous conservation group. So it’s very likely the path will become a firm favourite again.
